Wildcat tennis falls to Monroe

Sep 29 2009

Oak Harbor High School's boys' tennis team defeated Monroe earlier this season, but the Wildcats weren't able to duplicate the feat Monday on the Bearcats' courts.

Monroe won the match 5-2, getting revenge for a 4-3 season-opening loss at Oak Harbor Sept. 8.

The wins over each other are the only wins this fall for both teams, and they now have 1-8 records for the year.

It was a close match as five or the seven contests went three sets.

The Wildcats picked up wins in third singles and third doubles.

Ben Cardinal collected the singles win, 6-1, 6-1; and Kevin Gagen and Chris Holbrook took No. 3 doubles 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Oak Harbor's Derek Thomas lost in first singles 4-6, 7-5, 3-6. In second singles, Josh Evans was blanked 0-6, 0-6. Max O'Dell, in fourth singles, fell 6-4, 3-6, 3-6.

The first doubles duo of Geoff Worley and David DeGuzman lost 4-6, 6-4, 3-6.

In second doubles, Brandon Vagt and Chase Edwards went down 6-3, 2-6, 2-6.

Coach Horace Mells said, "Our team played well for the most part but committed too many errors to come away with a team victory."

Lake Stevens plays here Wednesday at 3:45.
