Man charged with assaulting woman

A 30-year-old Coupeville man is accused of assaulting a woman who had a protection order against him, court documents state.

Prosecutors charged Joseph Pfaendler in Island County Superior Court with assault in violation of a protection order. He could face from six months to a year in jail if convicted of the charge.

Pfaendler pleaded not guilty March 31.

Deputy Robert Mirabal with the Coupeville Marshal’s Office responded to a report of a domestic assault at an apartment on N. Main Street March 14. As he arrived at the door, he heard yelling and what sounded like a slap inside.

Pfaendler was in the apartment, along with a 33-year-old woman. It turned out that the woman had a protection order barring Pfaendler from having contact with her, court documents show.

Mirabal wrote that the woman, who was pregnant, claimed that Pfaendler pushed her to the ground, punched her in the head a couple of times and threatened to “knock the baby” out of her.

Pfaendler told the deputy that the woman had assaulted him, the report states.
