Oak Harbor High School is low on chaperones for this year’s homecoming dance, and no chaperones means no dancing.

At least 30 are needed by Oct. 10.

“So far we only have three,” Samantha Jackson, student representative to the Oak Harbor School Board, said at Monday’s meeting.

Principal Dwight Lundstrom said that one chaperone is needed for every 20 students. In the past, some smaller dances have been canceled when the quota isn’t reached, but they usually get enough volunteers for homecoming, he said.

The school requires that the students who organize the dance provide about 60 percent of the chaperones.

“Often times students don’t want their parents there and will stall on asking them,” Lundstrom said.

Chaperones are required to help with the coat check or are stationed at the doorways to keep students from leaving early.

To sign up, people must contact the district’s’volunteer coordinator, Martha Wallin, and fill out a volunteer packet.

Lundstrom said the homecoming dance is a one time deal, and will not be rescheduled if it is canceled.
