North Puget Sound Dragon Boat Club Wins Survivor Cup
Aug 30 2008
North Puget Sound Dragon Boat Club’s all-cancer paddling team, the Seavivors, won gold and brought home the coveted Survivor Cup on Aug. 23 at the fifth annual Celebrate Life Dragon Boat Festival on Lake Washington. The team’s final time for this exciting 300-meter competition was 1:45.60, edging out national racing team Pink Phoenix of Portland by 0.13 second. The club’s recreation team Windjammers came in a very close second in their division during the consolation heat with a time of 1:47.72.
“Our cancer team took the gold against some very impressive competition, Seattle’s Team SAKE and Portland’s Pink Phoenix, two top teams from the Northwest,” said third year coach and veteran paddler Suzanne Marter of Coupeville. “This is a medal that was won by the whole club, because we all worked hard together.”
With Marter as caller at the helm, steersperson Chris Storm of La Conner debuted her tilling skills to push Seavivors to victory.
North Puget Sound Dragon Boat Club paddles out of Oak Harbor and has open membership. Visit the web site www.npsdragonboat.org or call Tena at 678-9340 or Tom at 240-9878 for information.
