With the holiday season fast approaching, shoppers perusing the quaint shops in Coupeville could see an unexpected windfall if they are lucky.

The Coupeville Historic Waterfront Association’s Red Ticket promotion started Oct. 10 during Coupeville’s Harvest Fest and continues through Dec. 20.

Folks who spend $20 at the 30 or so businesses participating in this year’s promotion will receive a red ticket that will be entered in a drawing to win $1,000.

“It got people excited about shopping in Coupeville,” said Beth Graves, Bayleaf owner who is coordinating the promotion for the Waterfront Association. She didn’t know how many tickets were doled out last year, but Bayleaf gave out approximately 2,000.

She said the 30 businesses participating is an increase over last year. They include A Touch of Dutch, Anchorage Inn, Aqua Gifts, Back to the Island, Bayleaf, Beyond the Sea, Captain Jack’s, Christopher’s on Whidbey, Collections Boutique, Coupeville Auto Repair, Elkhorn Trading Co., Fabric Chicks, Genesis Hair and Tanning, Harbor Gift & Kayak Rental, Hunter Art Studio, Front Street Realty, Kapaw’s Iskreme, Kitchen Pantry, Kim’s Cafe, Knead and Feed Retail, Local Grown, Mosquito Fleet Chili, One More Thing!, Oystercatcher Restaurant, Penn Cove Gallery, Sea Side Salon and Spa, Tea and Treasure, The Blue Heron Gallery, The Coupeville Inn, The Honey Bear, The Kingfisher, Toby’s Tavern and Windjammer Gallery

A drawing will take place Sunday, Dec. 20 at 1 p.m. at the doorsteps of the Island County Museum at the intersection of Front and Alexander streets in downtown Coupeville.

Graves said 300 people braved a snowstorm last year to witness the drawing.
