The Falcon volleyball team polished off the Lakewood Cougars in three straight sets — 25-19, 29-27, 25-19 — to move into post-season play.

“Well, we did it,” said Falcon coach Mandy Jones. “We have made it to districts with a record of 8-6, clinching our third spot in league and I couldn’t be more proud of my team. They have fought throughout the season to get this far and we will continue to fight until our time is over.”

Jones said the win was just what was needed to boost spirits after the loss against Archbishop Murphy earlier.

“Lakewood played very well and is probably one of the nicest teams we have come across, they worked very hard and in the end they held their heads high,” Jones said.

“Melanie Murphy was so on last night with 12 digs; she did a great job as libero, reading the hitters and getting across the court very quickly,” Jones said. “All players played great.”

Wood led the Falcons

(8-6 in league and overall) with 16 kills, 15 digs and four aces. Lindsey Newman had 13 kills and 13 digs and teammate Kelsey Dorpat added 23 assists.

Wood felt the team played a great game.

“We wanted to bypass a crossover game and get to districts,” Wood said.

Dorpat said Jones was impressed with the skill levels the girls showed in the victory.

“At the end, we were loud and proud,” Dorpat said.

Jones added that the team played an outstanding match with confidence and pride.

“We played like we wanted to win and stepped onto the court knowing that we were going to play to win,” she said.

South Whidbey will play its first round of districts at 4 p.m. tonight at Lakewood High School.
