LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Kudos on making a great triathlon

Aug 25 2008

To the editor:

We at South Whidbey Parks & Rec would like to thank the many people who made this year’s Whidbey Island Triathlon a great success. The triathlon is a key fundraiser for the park’s programs, and enables us to put on many other quality recreational programs for our community.

We had 300 athletes register for the triathlon, more than half of which come from off-island, from as far away as Chicago, Ill. and Eagle River, Alaska. It’s an amazing moment to see that many athletes start off with a plunge into Goss Lake, and cross the finish line with big, exhausted grins.

It takes an immense group of people to support the race and we want to give thanks to the more than 100 volunteers that stepped up to make this a safe and fun event for the athletes. Volunteers were charged with preparing snacks, directing traffic, marking trails and much more. The race would simply be impossible without the help of our volunteers.

Thanks also to our sponsors and contributors: Half Link Bicycle Shop; South Whidbey Record, Krieg Construction, Emergency Medical Services of Whidbey General Hospital, Hanson’s Building Supply, Island Asphalt, Coldwell Banker Tara Properties, Island County and the city of Langley.
