South Whidbey Parks & Rec approves trail system management plan

The South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District approved its management plan for Trustland Trails Thursday.

The development plan is now available for public review.

"We were given this beautiful property," said Park Commissioner Allison Tapert. "The plan is a tool to guide us for future development. I think we were all extremely sensitive to the needs of the public and Whidbey Land Trust."

Trustland Trails, located at Highway 525 and Craw Road, is a 200-acre parcel of land given to the district by the state’s trust land transfer program in June 2007.

Beginning in early 2006, a group of volunteers participated in compiling information about the property and the result is the management plan that guides the district in developing future trails, providing recreation opportunities and protecting wildlife habitat.

In February 2008, the park district passed a $1.6 million bond which included $220,000 in funding for developing a new trailhead parking area and a handicapped-accessible trail at Trustland Trails.
