Award-winning playwright hosts evening in Langley

Aug 11 2008

Playwright and actor Danai Gurira will come to Langley next week for a one-night appearance at the Whidbey Island Theatre Festival.

Gurira will give a reading from her award-winning play, "In the Continuum."

The play — which centers on the lives of two people who discover they have been infected with HIV — was named one of the "Ten Best Plays of the Year" in 2006 by The New York Times and also won a Global Tolerance Award from the United Nations.

The playwright will also share her newest work, "Eclipsed."

Gurira, who was raised in Zimbabwe, earned an OBIE Award and a John Gassner Outer Critics Award in 2006, and last year won the Helen Hayes Award for "Best Actress in a Play" for "In the Continuum." She has also appeared in "Law and Order: Criminal Intent," and in the films "Ghost Town" and “The Visitor.”

Presented by the Whidbey Island Theatre Festival and Hedgebrook, “An Evening with Danai Gurira” is 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts, Langley. Admission is by donation.

The program will be moderated by Valerie Curtis-Newton, artistic director of the Hansberry Project at ACT Theatre.
