South End churches announce topics for Sunday

Guest professor will lead service

Dr. Miriam Adeney will speak at the South Whidbey Community Church on the topic, “How Much Power is Enough?” The sermon is based on the “Suffering Servant” passage of Isaiah 42:1-12.

Adeney is a professor at Seattle Pacific University, and adjunct faculty at Regent College and at Fuller Theological Seminary. She is also the incoming president of the American Society of Missiology.

A well-traveled anthropologist and author of several books on intercultural studies, she will also speak at 9 a.m. to the South Whidbey Community Church combined Adult Learning Forum classes about introducing Jesus to Muslim women.

As with all of the church’s speaking and worship events, the public is cordially invited to hear Dr. Adeney at both the adult forum and worship service.

Each worship service begins at 10 a.m. and is preceded at 9 a.m. by two adult learning forums: one is a discussion of the Book of Romans, led by Stan Walker; the other a study of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, led by Jim Craft. And midweek Bible studies continue in the Gospel of Luke, at

7 p.m. Wednesdays, led by Art Angst at Rick and Dinah Zapata’s home.

South Whidbey Community Church is open to everyone and gathers for worship each Sunday at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road, Langley.

Beverly Graham speaks at Unity

Beverly Graham will conduct the Unity service this Sunday.

Her talk will highlight service and gratitude as focusing us on the importance of love in our world. Her message will be accompanied by song and story, and members and friends are invited to bring guests.

The service is at 10 a.m. at Bayview Hall.

Following the main service, the monthly “heart circle” gathering will convene in the basement. Those who are interested in this new development are invited to ask questions.

Rev. Ketcham gives sermon

At the Sunday service on Sept. 28, Rev. Kit Ketcham will offer thoughts and perspectives on the relationship between Unitarian Universalist ideals and those of the Jewish High Holidays. How can we examine the past year, acknowledge mistakes made, ask forgiveness and enter a new year with joy and anticipation?

Children’s religious exploration classes and childcare will be provided. The service is at 10 a.m. at 20103 Highway 525, just north of Freeland.

Rosh HaShanah with Bet Shira

Join Jews from Whidbey Island as they travel to Port Townsend to be welcomed for Rosh HaShanah this year. Their services are lay-led, child-friendly and open to Jews with a diversity of experience and background.

The schedule is 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, for Erev Rosh HaShanah; and 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, for the main service. All services will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Jefferson and Tyler, uptown Port Townsend.

Tashlich is 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at North Beach Park, and there will be a dairy/vegetarian potluck.

Bet Shira does not require tickets; non-members of Bet Shira who attend services are strongly encouraged to make a donation.

Members of the Whidbey Island Jewish Community will carpool to Keystone to meet the 6 p.m. ferry to Port Townsend. There is a walk from the ferry dock to services (or special arrangements for transport on the other side can be made if needed).
