Christian Science is sermon subject

Mary Baker Eddy, in 1866, discovered the “Christ Science or divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love,” and she named that discovery Christian Science. For 150 years, people have been utilizing her clear teachings, based on the Bible and the teachings of Christ Jesus, for healing and harmony in their daily lives.

All are invited for the service on Sunday, June 29 on the subject of “Christian Science.”

Services begin at 10:30 a.m. at 2411 E. Highway 525 (across from Useless Bay Road) on South Whidbey.

‘Why I Am a Quaker Trinitarian’

The speaker at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island this Sunday is Tom Ewell, a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).

He is committed to nonviolence and peace education, particularly in churches, schools and prisons. Ewell is involved in legislative work with several Friends Committees and is a board member of the Whidbey Institute and the Whidbey Island Peace and Reconciliation Network. He will speak on his interpretation of Mark 12:28-34.

The Unitarian Universalist Church meets at 4 p.m. in the chapel at Trinity Lutheran, Woodard and Highway 525, Freeland.

Guest speaker at Unity of Whidbey

The Unity service on Sunday will be conducted by Angela Eckrum who is visiting from Everett Unity Church.

Angela and her husband Jack will be supported on the piano by Lynn Parr. The service begins at 10 a.m. at Bayview Community Hall. All are welcome.

Sermon based on Gospel of John

Why is it so important for many folks to thoroughly investigate the claims of Jesus before they commit to becoming a Christian? Tomorrow morning at South Whidbey Community Church, Dr. Ed Cook returns for a sermon entitled “Come and See: An Invitation to Investigation,” based on the first chapter of the Gospel of John.

Cook is a church planter and founding pastor of Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Seattle. He has a graduate degree from Fuller Theological Seminary and a doctorate of ministry degree from Carey Theological College in Vancouver, B.C.

Each worship service begins at 10 a.m. and is preceded at 9 a.m. by two adult learning forums: one is a discussion of the Book of Romans, led by Stan Walker; the other a study of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, led by Jim Craft. And midweek Bible Studies continue in the Gospel of Luke, at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, led by Art Angst at Rick and Dinah Zapata’s home.

South Whidbey Community Church is open to everyone and gathers for worship each Sunday at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road, Langley. The church is a newly-formed independent, evangelical, non-denominational church.

Vacation Bible school in Langley

A “Veggietale” vacation Bible school will set sail this summer at Langley CMA Church.

The school is for kids who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade, and will be held at the church from 9 a.m. to noon July 14 through July 18.

Bible camp coming to St. Augustine’s

St. Augustine’s in-the-Woods Episcopal Church in Freeland will host a vacation Bible camp.

Registration is now open to all young persons, ages 4 through 14. Those youth over 14 are encouraged to volunteer to be leaders.

The camp is Aug. 11 to Aug. 15, and the cost is $25 per young person ($50 maximum per family). Scholarships are available.
