Boys unseat Cowboys, 89-20

For The Beachcomber

It took the Pirates six seconds to score their first basket against the Chimacum Cowboys last Tuesday at home.

John Gage controlled the tip to Thomas Timm-Skove, who scored off three giant steps to the hoop. The Pirates went on to trounce the Cowboys, 89-20. Friday’s highly anticipated game at Cascade Christian was canceled because of the weather. A makeup date has not been set.

It has been said that most players on this year’s Pirate bench could be starters for any of Vashon’s league rivals. Coach Andy Sears substituted early and often, giving home fans a chance to see why.

Juniors Elias Westin and Quinn Holert each dumped in 14 points, while garnering their fair share of rebounds, steals and assists.

Westin attacked the hoop ferociously, at one point lofting a delicate tear drop for two points from the midst of heavy contact in the lane. Holert again showed his assassin’s touch — sinking two 3s — but also his speed and agility in pushing the fast break down court.

The fast-paced Pirate offense and pressure defense left the Cowboys outgunned, resulting in a 51-9 margin by the half.

Sears’ starters opened the second half on a 10-0 run. At that point, the game was largely turned over to the bench, who pressed their case for more playing minutes. The backcourt trio of Odin Jacobovitch, Michael Stoffer and Kyle Bakker dominated the boards on both ends of the court and scored a number of put-backs on the offensive end. They also closed the gate on any Cowboy attempt to drive the middle.

By the end of the game, not only had every Pirate played, but every Pirate had scored in this lopsided contest.

The Pirates play the Steilacoom Sentinels in a Saturday, Dec. 27, away game, before heading to a tournament in Oregon. The Sentinels, old 2A Nisqually rivals, have a strong team and are likely to give the Pirates a serious contest.
