Volleyball splits the week in two matches

During their three-game match against Cascade Christian Sept. 24, the girls volleyball team took the lead several times, but couldn’t seem to pull away with a win.

The score of game one ended with the Cougars 25 and the Pirates 20, in spite of numerous impressive kills by junior India Everett.

The Pirates looked strong with a solid four-point lead over the Cougars during the exciting second game.

Middle-hitter Katie Tomlinson served several very important ace points, showing the team’s tough offensive side.

Defensive specialist Jessica Pirruccio had numerous successful passes to front row setter Devin Anderson.

However, in spite of the Pirates’ determination, the Cougars managed to tie the score 25-25 and then stole game two 27-25. The Cougars capitalized on Pirate errors during the last two important points of this game.

Game three found the Pirates down the first 11 points but not at all discouraged. The team rallied and came back to within two points of the Cougars with the score Pirates 18 and Cougars 20.

Middle-hitter Marika Treese strategically placed numerous kills and tips over the net during this game, helping to earn the Pirates’ final score of 20 to the Cougars 25.

In spite of having four new players on the varsity team this year, the Pirates showed their skill and competence against the Cougars, who won the 2007 Nisqually League championship. The Pirates have one last opportunity to beat this tough team on Vashon Oct. 20.

Earlier in the week, on Sept. 22, the girls defeated Chimacum 3-0.
