4-H Rock Riders impress at fair

Several members of the Vashon Rock Riders 4-H Club recently competed at the Washington State Fair in Puyallup.

Vashon’s intermediate rider Taylor Shride took the Reserve Champion ribbon in showmanship and earned red ribbons in both dressage and hunt seat over fences.

Senior gamer Addie Davis, although qualified, was unable to compete because of an injury to her horse, but she volunteered to serve as ring steward during that section.

Also volunteering were Shride and Anna Wilson, who performed as ring and gate stewards for the Groom Squad competition on Sept. 7.

Earlier on that day, Lizzy Corliss represented King County in the judging competition. Corliss placed 22nd out of more than 300 competitors.

In the intermediate performance section, Margaret Heagerty received red ribbons in showmanship and hunt seat equitation, a blue in bareback equitation and a blue in what was widely held to be the most difficult trail course ever featured at the state fair.

These riders and their clubmates are already looking forward to the challenges of the upcoming 4-H year, which begins Oct. 1.

McMurray soccer wins one, loses one

In their season opener the McMurray Middle School soccer Mustangs easily handled Cascade Christian in a 9-1 win.

Josh Owensby played well in goal and gave up the only CC goal near the end of the game. Scoring the goals for the Mustangs were Fernando Arceo with a 3-goal hat trick, and Van Ralston, Ben Reoux, Zack Drape, Tanner Montague, Sean O’Neil and Isaac Slaughter each came up with one.

On Wednesday, Sept. 24, the Mustangs started out slow and found themselves down 5-0 at half against Seattle Christian. The team played much better in the second half, but the first half goals were too much to overcome in a 7-2 losing effort. Scoring the goals in this game were Ralston and Reoux each with one.

Mustangs football takes Kingston, 13-0

After a dominating 13-0 win over Kingston, the McMurray Mustangs football team plays its home opener today against Klahowya at 3:45 p.m. on the Vashon High School Football field.

Bud’s Bombers 7, Orting 0.

Held scoreless for two weeks, Bud’s Bombers got back on the scoreboard last Saturday facing the Orting Animals for the second time, holding them to no points.

Back in action after two weeks out with an injured hand, Vashon’s star running-back Curtis St. Germain carried Vashon’s first-quarter touchdown. Clyde Pruett ran in the extra point, and the defensive battle began.

Defensive end Sean Casey provided great containment, protecting the outside line, while punishing tackles delivered by lineman Azim St. Germain fired-up the defense clear to the final whistle.

Vincenzo DeBlasi, playing left guard, did an awesome job anchoring both offensive and defensive lines throughout the game.

Orting 6, Vashon Heavies 0.

The Heavies held the intimidating Orting Animals scoreless for four quarters, sending the game into a college-style overtime that ended in a heartbreaking 6-0 loss.

Corner Edgar Polkat was integral in this defensive struggle, breaking up pass plays and recovering a fumble.

Also outstanding were linebackers Harper Whitney and Logan Nelson. Defensive standouts Franklin Easton, Matt Kruly, Jason Kruly, Ezra Ende and Josh Tillman consistently penetrated the Animals’ front line. Ende alone had five tackles behind the line of scrimmage and many tackles to stop plays.

On the offensive side, the Pirates ran the ball well against Orting’s 5-3 defense. Sam Yates ran a 60-yard quarterback sneak off a silent count. Chase Wickman showed great cuts and acceleration, especially on power plays.

Rookie Jessie Norton impressed the coaches with several positive yardage off-tackle runs.
