Burby Fun Run supports Vashon High students, athletes
Jun 25 2008
The Bill Burby Inspirational Fun Run and Walk is a family affair. Burby was a beloved coach, teacher and mentor at Vashon High School who died suddenly of cardiac arrest in 1989. His legacy lives on in this community event.
Proceeds from the event support Vashon High School (VHS) varsity athletics and the Vashon Community Scholarship Fund.
The Fun Run and Walk will be held in conjunction with the Strawberry Festival at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 12. This year’s event honors Vashon Island Junior Basketball (VIJB). Nisqually League Champion VHS girls’ and boys’ basketball teams are both reaping the benefits of VIJB’s youth program.
Burby’s son Aaron makes it a habit to run the 10k and finished second in his age group last year. Senior Nicholas Bordner was this year’s recipient of the Bill Burby Wellness Scholarship.
Race participants can do a bit of carb loading at the Kiwanis pancake breakfast before or after the race. Tickets to the pancake breakfast will be available for purchase during day-of-race registration.
Northwest Sports will be awarding four generous prizes to random participants after the race. Windermere Real Estate will supply water for all racers. All pre-registered participants will receive a custom designed T-shirt paid for, in part, by Vashon Rotary.
Pick up registration forms at Island businesses, request an e-mail version at burby10k5k@aol.com, or save money and register online at www.signmeup.com.
