Girls take second and boys take sixth in track league meet

The 1A Nisqually League Track and Field championships were held on May 6 and 7. Fife High School was the venue for both the 1A and 2A league meets this year.
For the team competition, the boys scored 39 points to finish in the sixth spot. The girls were the runners-up in second place with 102 points.
“There were some great individual performances in the meet. However, the guys needed some more depth to score more points,” said coach Kevin Ross.
“A fair amount of the points came from our 800, 1,600 and 3,200 girls,” said Ross.
Charles Wright Academy (CWA) won both the boys and girls team competition. Jacqueline Jewell, Savannah Krug and Leigh Sheridan started the meet off with all three of them qualifying for the district meet in the 3,200. The race started with a sea of green uniforms as Vashon and CWA ran in a pack for most of the race. It came down to Jewell making a pretty strong kick in the last lap to claim the league title in 12:11. She was followed by Krug in 12:20, and Sheridan took fourth at 12:41. This gave the girls team 24 points right from the start.
The other Nisqually league champion is Kate Straube in the 100 high hurdles at 16.78 seconds and 300 hurdles at 48.71 seconds. Straube also anchored the 4X400 relay team to a second-place finish in 4:28.93 to qualify them for the district meet.
Other district qualifiers were Jewell finishing second in the 1600 at 5:31, and in the 800 it was Jewell in second at 2:34.78. Krug finished third at 2:37.69.
Emma Lodes finished second in the 400 in 1:06.46 and fifth in the long jump at 13’4.” Also moving on to the district meet will be the girls 4X100 and 4X200 teams. They will be joined by the guys 4X100 and 4X400 teams as well.
In the boys 400, it was James Spencer finishing third in 54.00, and teammate Nathan Betz crossed the line in fourth at 54.63. Colin Andrus made a late surge in the 800 to cause a photo finish with Keller Cyra at the line. The picture confirmed that Andrus took fourth place in 2:16.24, and Cyra had fifth place at 2:16.26. Earlier in the meet Cyra also qualified in the 1600 with a time of 4:57. Also competing for a spot at state is Adam Thalhofer who finished third in the 300 hurdles at 45.27.
Tomorrow and Saturday, the 1A Tri-District track meet will be held at King’s High School in Shoreline. The meet will consist of teams from the Nisqually, Emerald City, Cascade and Northwest leagues. The top five athletes from each event will qualify for the state track meet to be held at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma over Memorial Day weekend.
