Vashon wins thriller against Garfield Vashon High School Varsity Lacrosse Club finished its season with three games, two back to back against two of the top teams in Division I high school lacrosse. The Vultures won a thrilling game, 8-7, against Seattle’s powerhouse Garfield High School last Saturday, May 3, and lost to another powerhouse, Mercer Island, 15-4, on Friday, May 2. Garfield needed to beat Vashon to gain a spot in the state high school playoffs, and the Vultures denied them. Garfield’s roster included the the top scorer in Washington high school lacrosse, and Vashon was without one of its top defenders, Ian Blixt. But Vashon showed why there is such promise in the years ahead. Vashon’s defense stood up to the high-powered Garfield offense, limiting it to 3 goals at halftime. Vashon took the lead in the third quarter behind the offense of freshman Gregor Davidheiser and one of the team’s only three seniors, Derek Kimbrough. On goals from junior Jack Lorence and Davidheiser, Vashon took a 3-goal lead into the final five minutes of the fourth quarter. Then Garfield made a furious comeback run, scoring 2 goals in the final five minutes, but Vashon’s Ross Bowers was able to win the final face-off to deny Garfield a final scoring opportunity. Davidheiser led scorers with 4 goals, and Kimbrough had 2. Junior goalie Chad Richardson registered his finest game of the season with 17 saves. Against Mercer Island, the Vultures stayed close through the first quarter, but Mercer pulled away by halftime and never looked back. Vashon just didn’t have an answer for Mercer Island’s staunch defense and ball-control offense, said coach Charley Rosenberry. The game on Tuesday, April 29, resulted in a close 9-8 Vultures defeat at the hands of Curtis High School. Curtis has a very talented team this year, said Rosenberry, but Vashon started the game with intensity and intelligence to take a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Curtis came back to take the lead at half 5-4, and maintained a 1-goal lead at the end of three quarters, 7-6. Curtis scored the first goal of the fourth quarter, but then Vashon scored twice, the tying goal coming from junior Wyatt Williams with four minutes left in regulation. Curtis then put the ball in the control of one of the league’s top offensive players, Landon Carr, who drove to score the final and winning goal. Rosenberry said, “This was a wonderful team effort for Vashon.
