Editorial: Islanders’ commitment to Vashon is evident

More than 100 Vashon residents showed up for a recent meeting held by the Army Corps of Engineers to discuss Glacier’s proposed gravel barging operation on Maury Island. Their presence, and their strong words at the meeting, hopefully let the Corps know how important it is that they do a thorough, scientifically based inquiry into the potential environmental effects of Glacier’s proposal.
It was heartening to see so many Islanders stand up and speak out for what they believe. At a time when some people think the fight against Glacier is over, more than 100 people knew that it is not, and they showed up in support of Vashon Island and the beautiful creatures that inhabit its waters. We as a community must continue to fight for the preservation of Maury Island and its nearshore environment. One way to do so is to let the Army Corps of Engineers know how far it should go in its Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) investigation.
Many thanks to the 100-plus Islanders who attended last week’s EIS scoping meeting. For those who were unable to attend, there’s still time to voice your opinion. See page 22 for mailing and e-mail addresses where Islanders can send comments to the Army Corps of Engineers now through Aug. 13.
