Drama Dock gets set for a summer musical

Drama Dock is putting the finishing touches on a new production — a celebrated Broadway musical with an odd and edgy title.

“Urinetown: The Musical,” which won three Tony Awards in 2002, is set in a futuristic metropolis poised on the edge of ecological disaster, where citizens must pay an evil corporate bureaucracy for everything — even their basic bodily functions.

Stephen Floyd, who is directing the musical, wants theater-goers to know that “Urinetown” is also filled with humor, beautiful melodies and what he called “a very sweet love story.”

“It’s been very fun to work on,” Floyd said. “It’s quintessentially American — a real Fourth of July show.”

Shannon Flora, an actress who has a major part in the show, agreed.

“The show is very funny, and yes, it has a terrible title,” she laughed.

Audiences who attend “Urinetown” can look forward to an on-stage reunion of two favorite local actors.

Rich Wiley and Louie Mangione, who both played villains in the company’s production of “Oliver,” have once again been cast as scoundrels in “Urinetown.”

David Katz and Coriel O’Reilly-Silkett are the show’s romantic leads.

“Urinetown” will be performed at Vashon High School July 9 to 12 and 16 to 19, with all shows starting at 7:30 p.m. except for a 4 p.m. matinee on July 12.
