Ferry talks to take place

Islanders concerned about ferry service — including the passenger-only boat and pricing strategies for car ferries — will have two opportunities in June to meet with top officials.

At the Vashon-Maury Island Community Council transportation committee meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 19, Kjris Lund will give an update on the passenger-only ferry’s transition from the state to King County’s new ferry district. And Doug Johnson of Metro will give an update on ridership, emergency service and the Bus Rapid Ride system.

The meeting will be held at McMurray Middle School.

The Island’s ferry advisory committee will hold a meeting on behalf of the Washington state Department of Transportation from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, at McMurray to discuss the system’s pricing strategies, including higher fares for those who travel during peak times.

Fireworks over Quartermaster

The Hardware Store Restaurant and friends are sponsoring a Fourth of July fireworks display over Quartermaster Harbor for the second year in a row, so Islanders can again look forward to a dazzling display.

As usual, the display will take place as soon as night falls and will be viewable over most of the inner harbor.

The Vashon Library will offer two free one-week intensive English Language Learners classes taught by Celina Yarkin. Beginners will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, June 23 to 26. Intermediates will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. June 30 to July 3. For more information, contact Yarkin at 463-0007. Pre-registration is not necessary.

Rotary to sell fresh berries

Place an order for fresh raspberries, strawberries or blueberries, and support Vashon Island Rotary Club’s community projects.

This year, due to the fluctuating weather, all berries will be delivered fresh. Pre-orders may be taken until July 8 by calling Windermere Real Estate and leaving an order on the “berry line” at 463-9148, ext. 222.

Strawberries are $29 for a full bucket (15 pounds) and $18 for a half-bucket (7.5 pounds). Raspberries are $35 for a full bucket (14 pounds) and $21 for half-bucket (6.5 pounds). Blueberries, delivered fresh in August, are $10 for a three-pound bag.
