Grand Parade

The Grand Parade, one of the highlights of the festival for many Islanders, will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday. The kids’ parade will lead the way, and all Island kids are welcome to participate.

The parade will begin south of town in front of Puget Sound Energy and end at Ober Park.

The parade is still accepting entries. Download an application from www.vashonchamber.com.

Classic Car Parade

The Classic Car Parade will be at noon Sunday. Cars will line up at Puget Sound Energy and take a winding path to the Show and Shine until 5 p.m. in front of Vashon Auto Parts/NAPA.

Wine and Jazz Fusion

This event is back for its fifth year and will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday in front of Windermere. There will be wine for tasting and purchasing, food to enjoy and music by the Hobson-Person Trio.

Transportation

Road Closures

Vashon Highway S.W. will be closed to all traffic in the downtown area from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

During the parades, the highway will be closed from S.W. Cove Road to S.W. Cemetery Road. After the parade, the southernmost closure will move up to in front of Movie Magic.

This year, according to chamber of commerce Executive Director Lee Ockinga, merchant passes will be given only to merchants who need them. They will only be good between 10 and 11 a.m. at the Cove Road and 107th Avenue barricades and will enable merchants and their employees to go east to 100th Avenue S.W. via Bank Road but not across the highway. There will be no access for anyone across the highway while it is closed, she said.

Shuttle bus

A $1 shuttle bus will run from the north-end ferry dock from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. The shuttles will wait for incoming ferries, so they will not run on a fixed schedule.

Regular Metro service will occur on Saturday following detours through town.

Parking (for a good cause)

The Presbyterian Church will offer parking spaces for viewing the parade and attending the festival on Saturday. The parking is offered at a suggested donation of $5, which will be used to provide scholarship for the church’s adopted Vietnamese student, who is in her final year at a university in Vietnam.

To reserve a parking space in advance should contact Beverly Skeffington at 354-8921 or skeffie@centurytel.net.

The group can issue a reservation confirmation by e-mail so that people can proceed through barricades the day of the parade. Spaces will be held only until 10 minutes prior to the children’s parade, which begins at 11 a.m. Chairs to watch the parade will also be available for donation and can be reserved in advance as well.
