Cruise for Senior Center

The Vashon-Maury Senior Center is once again sponsoring a fundraising cruise. The 2009 cruise will depart on Oct. 15 from the historic New Jersey Cape Liberty cruise port, located 15 minutes from the Newark airport and seven miles south of Manhattan.

Heading north, this 10-day cruise will call at Sydney, Nova Scotia, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Quebec City and Halifax and offers an unparalleled opportunity to see Eastern Canada in all its fall glory.

The cruise combines a unique itinerary, a fantastic travel value and an opportunity to travel in comfort with people you know from the community. At the same time it is an opportunity to contribute to the ongoing operations of the Senior Center, as all amenity points and other group benefits resulting from the group booking go to the senior center.

This cruise is sponsored by the Senior Center but is open to everyone who wishes to enjoy a wonderful vacation and take advantage of group rates.

To learn first-hand about the cruise, please plan to attend a cruise night event at the Senior Center on Bank Road at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 24. Please call Vashon Island Travel at 463-6871 if you have any questions.

Quilters to sew for soldiers

The Vashon Island Quilt Guild met on July 15 with Nan Caskey, Dina Farlow, Pam Dawdy and Jo Anne Kirby doing hostess duties.

Pat Stougard and Lorraine Kimmel spoke about and showed samples of the crazy quilt blocks which will be the subject of the Oct. 21 meeting.

It was announced that quilt book author Cyndi Walker is available to speak at the Nov. 18 meeting. Katie Plucinski will make the arrangements with Cyndi.

Kathy Pierce reminded members that the Aug. 19 meeting will feature the director of the La Conner Quilt Museum.

Members were reminded about Quiltfest in Seattle on Aug. 8, 9 and 10. Tickets and information are available at www.APNQ.org.

Jo Ann Bardeen reported on the first meeting of the Quilt Show Committee. The show is scheduled for May 2 and 3, 2009.

Sue Nebeker reported on activities of the American Hero Quilts group and read a letter from the grateful family of a quilt recipient.

Many beautiful “Uncle Sam” quilts that were made at the workshop at Edee Eggert’s house last month were displayed and admired. Another day for making patriotic quilts will be Tuesday, July 22. Call Edee Eggert at 463-5065 for details or to sign up.

The techinque of reverse applique was demonstrated by Pam Dawdy. While the meeting was in progress, bindings for soldier quilts were hand-stitched by members. Other patriotic quilts were available to take home to add bindings and complete them.
