Italian Club meets Friday

The next Italian Club meeting will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday June 27, in the reception hall at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Meetings will be monthly on the last Friday of the month.

This is an opportunity to meet fellow Italians, practice the language, experience the culture and enjoy some great authentic Italian food. This month we will focus on Southern Italian cuisine and wines from Sicily and Calabria, so please bring a dish to share. We will have Italian music and a few games for a fun time. Families and bambinos welcome.

For questions, please contact me at 567-4273 or e-mail mabeardsley@centurytel.net.

Market is local treasure

Our extended spring weather has made for an extended planting season, and one of the best places to supply oneself for this happy task is the Vashon Farmers Market.

Where else can one visit and choose from as many 10 plant nurseries in only one stop? Right in the middle of town at the Village Green, one can talk directly to the growers while choosing among native plants, bedding flowers, exotic and locally rare trees and shrubs, dozens of the finest tomato and pepper varieties, herbs and vegetable starts, one can get firsthand advice on where and how to plant that heirloom tomato, 10-foot tall lily, white Oriental poppy, New Guinea basil or Asiatic maple.

The first of Vashon’s agricultural goods are also starting to arrive, while Sol Source Foods and Monkey Tree restaurant are there on alternate Saturdays with hot food and drink.

If the weather’s fair, the Green fills up with some of Vashon’s most intriguing craftspeople and artisans, including watercolor and photographic artists, a supreme woodworker, a high quality chocolatier, recycled-goods geniuses and many more.

The hours are Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., hours that these local entrepreneurs try to fill with as many plants and other goods as their wagons can hold.
