Oak Harbor High School athletic trainer Trevor Reed called it “like the ending of a Disney movie.”

The Wildcats’ lone soccer senior, Vance Frietas, scored the winning goal with 45 seconds left in the second overtime in his final game to carry his team to a 2-1 win over Everett at Wildcat Memorial Stadium Wednesday, May 2.

Frietas said, “It felt amazing. It is the best way I could ever end by senior season.”

For a while it appeared it just might not be Oak Harbor’s night.  The Wildcats missed three great looks in the first half while Everett punched in a goal to go up 1-0.

After Gavin Stewart scored off an assist from Matt Jensen (who also assisted on Frietas’ game winner) in the 54th minute to even the score, Oak Harbor again had several excellent chances to score but was turned back by diving saves by the Everett keeper.

Frietas, however, made sure it ended well.

Coach Brian Thompson said, “Everybody did their job on the field tonight. Caley Powers, on the outside, helped a lot; Vance and Matt worked hard up front.”
