Boys basketball

Cleveland 58, Lindbergh 54

Despite a huge game from junior Dallas Searles, a short-handed Lindbergh team fell 58-54 to Cleveland Dec. 30.

Lindbergh (1-5 overall, 1-2 Seamount) led by three after the first quarter, but slumped with just 14 combined points in the second and third quarters. Lindbergh's pressure defense worked well to create turnovers and easy shots, but the team just didn't convert.

"We were a little rusty," said Lindbergh coach Barry Johnson. "We played hard but couldn't knock down the easy short shots and layups."

The Eagles had practiced just twice in 14 days before the game and were missing Kyle Swannack, Derrick Roseboro and Shawn Holman – two starters and a key player off the bench.

Searles scored 28 points to lead all scorers in the game. The 6-foot-1 guard also collected seven rebounds, five assists and took five charges. He went 4 for 7 on three-point shots.

Willie Creear scored 11 points and Demarr Ferguson scored nine for the Eagles.

Lindbergh resumes league play against Kennedy (2-5, 0-3) Jan. 7.

Newport 72, Hazen 49

Hazen started slow and never recovered against Newport Dec. 30. Newport won 72-49.

Freshman Frankie Johnson scored 17 points to lead Hazen (1-5, 1-2). Senior standout Caleb Frary was held under double digits in points for the first time this season, with nine. Frary is still averaging 17.5 points per game this season.

Hazen has a non-league game against Jan. 5 against Sammamish (3-4, 1-2 KingCo), then resumes league play against Renton (4-1, 3-0) Jan 6.

Girls basketball

Hazen 58, North Mason 35

Hazen edged North Mason 38-35 Dec. 30.

The Highlanders (3-2, 1-2) fell behind early, but outscored North Mason 19-11 in the third quarter to take the lead. Freshman Airashay Rogers scored 18 points to lead all scorers. It was her third game scoring 18 points or more so far this season (five games).

Darralita Taylor and Michelle Wnek each scored six for Hazen.

Hazen plays Liberty (5-1, 2-0 KingCo) in a non-league game Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Hazen. Hazen and Renton (1-3, 1-2) will play Jan. 6 in a return to league action.

Liberty 59, Ingraham 50

Three Patriots scored in double digits as Liberty topped Ingraham 59-50 Dec. 30.

Corinna Van Hurston led all scorers with 21 points for Liberty, while Katie Growden added 15 and Danni Sjolander added 10.

The win was the Patriots' third straight and the team has yet to lose to a team from Washington this season. Liberty's only loss was to Coeur d'Alene 71-52 on Dec. 5.

Liberty plays Hazen Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Hazen, then faces Eastside Catholic (0-5, 0-3 Metro) Jan. 5.
