Allison Fernald of Renton, 11, clings to a tree branch with a smile on her face as her friend, Justin Lopes of Kent, 14, melodramatically dives her direction to “save” her Wednesday on the Cedar River in downtown Renton. The shallow stretch of river had drawn a handful of swimmers on the hot, summer day. Lopes and Fernald waded across the river together to make their exit.
