Kentwood’s Moore chooses Nebraska

Oct 17 2008

She had plenty of choices.

But when it came down to it for Kentwood High basketball star Lindsey Moore, the University of Nebraska just seemed like the right decision.

“I went out there, I checked it out twice and found it was the right fit for me,” admitted Moore, who recently made a verbal committment to the Big 12 university. “From last year, I knew I had liked them and that they were in my top three. I really didn’t know if anyone was going to beat them.”

And no one did.

Moore, a 5-foot-10 sharpshooting guard, has guided the Conquerors to the last three Class 4A state tournaments. She averaged 17.8 points, 7.9 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 3.7 steals per game last year in earning the South Puget Sound League North Division’s MVP award. In addition, Moore also has led Kentwood to the last three SPSL North titles. During Kentwood’s three-year run, the Moore-led Conquerors have gone 45-1 in league play and 74-12 overall.

Moore also was being recruited by the University of Washington, Iowa State and Boise State among others.

“Out of all the four schools, (Washington) fought the hardest,” said Moore, who will get a full-ride scholarship to play in Lincoln.

And though she has time to change her mind, Moore doesn’t see it happening.

“As soon as I said it and committed, I felt I could float,” she said. “I was super excited about it. I was so relieved. It was a huge burden off my shoulders.”

In the Cornhuskers, Moore will be going to a program that is clearly on the rise. Last year, Nebraska earned its second straight NCAA tournament trip. The Cornhuskers went 21-12 last year and advanced to the second round of the tournament.

Now that the decision has been made, Moore can’t help but look forward to the winter basketball season, when the Conquerors once again will be the favorite to win the SPSL North and are expected to make a deep run into the state tournament.

“It’s my last year and I have to go out with a bang,” she said.
