Republican mantra hasn’t gotten us anywhere

Nov 02 2008

In reading your recent article about Rep. Pat Sullivan and challenger Tim Miller, it became clear that Miller simply repeats the conservative Republican mantra of cutting taxes, deregulating businesses and claiming that government is inefficient.

At the fderal level, we have cut taxes (at least for businesses and the wealthy) for the last eight years, and what has it gotten us? Massive deficits.

We have deregulated businesses, and what has it gotten us? Massive corporate fraud and mismanagement, failing businesses and a collapsing economy.

And as for the supposed inefficiency of government, did you know that Social Security’s overhead is just 2 percent? I’ve worked in the business world for over 30 years, and I have never, ever, seen a business that could run that efficiently.

Washington state has one of the best climates in the nation for small businesses, according to Forbes Magazine. We have a job-growth rate that is above the national average, and our unemployment rate is among the lowest in the nation.

This has been accomplished by a Legislature and governor who refused to go along with the slash-and-burn, cut taxes and deregulate prescriptions of the Republicans who nationally, have driven our economy into the biggest nose-dive since the Great Depression.

Pat Sullivan (and Geoff Simpson, too) have been leaders in the Washington Legislature in crafting effective policies that protect not only businesses but also the people of this state. They are conscientious, knowledgeable and committed. It is imperative at this time of economic peril that we return them both to the House of Representatives.
