Prep sports wrap: Beamer's Carpio pins down coveted wrestling titles

Todd Beamer High School freshman wrestler Ares Carpio had quite a Christmas break.

The wrestler won a pair of prestigious tournament titles for the Titans. Carpio snared the 112-pound title at the Pacific Coast Wrestling Championships at Hudson’s Bay High School in Vancouver Saturday and the individual title at the Rogers Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27 in Puyallup.

Carpio’s championship at the Pacific Coast tournament was the most impressive of the two. The ninth-grader downed Deer Park High School’s Blake Adams in the championship match, 13-11. The Pacific Coast Wrestling Championships included 34 teams from Washington and Oregon.

Carpio’s first-place finish helped Beamer finish in ninth place as a team. Graham-Kapowsin won the team title with 201.5 points, followed by Deer Park (178.5) and Tahoma (172). Decatur ended up in 16th place.

Carpio pinned Columbia River’s Zach Finchum in just 32 seconds in his tournament opener and followed that up with a 3:40 pin of Enumclaw’s Marcus Nichols in the second round. Carpio then beat Rogers’ Tyler Carlyle in the quarterfinals, 12-4, and downed Heritage’s Clint Powers, 10-4, to earn a berth into the final match.

At the Rogers Holiday Tournament, Carpio beat Curtis’ Cort Schatz, 8-5, in the championship match, after preliminary-round wins over Nichols and Bellarmine Prep’s David Ladenburg.

Beamer’s Trevor Mills joined Carpio on top of his weight class at the Rogers Holiday Tournament. Mills won the 135-pound title with a victory over Rogers’ Bobby Hawkins in the championship, 6-2.

Mills also finished second at 130 pounds at the Pacific Coast Wrestling Championships. He lost to Gresham’s (Ore.) John Reese in the title match, 4-2, after two shutouts and a pin in his first three matches.

The Decatur Gators had a pair of wrestlers finish in third place in Vancouver in defending state heavyweight champion, Tevyn Tillman, and 189-pounder Darren Faber.

Tillman was pinned by Jefferson (Ore.) High School’s Jacob Mitchell in the semifinals. Mitchell went on to win the 285-pound championship.

Faber easily won his first three matches of the tournament before losing to Auburn’s Jake Swartz in the semifinals, 10-2. Faber went on to beat Graham-Kapowsin’s Shayne Erickson and Emerald Ridge’s Mitch Steed in the consolation bracket to secure third place.

Girls basketball

Things couldn’t have gone much better for the Federal Way Eagles during an 80-24 blowout win over the Todd Beamer Titans Saturday night — especially during the third quarter.

The Eagles held the Titans scoreless during the eight-minute quarter and outscored Beamer 25-0 during the period. The win improved Federal Way to 5-3 overall and the loss dropped the Titans to 1-6.

The Eagles jumped all over Beamer in the first quarter, rolling to a 21-8 lead. Federal Way extended the lead to 39-14 at halftime before the shut out in the third quarter.

The Eagles had five players score in double figures and had 11 players score during the game. Sophomore Tyshana Burgess led Federal Way with 14 points. Darah Huertes-Vining chipped in 13, Jacqie Evenson finished with 12 and Brittany Barrington and Chantel Dixon both scored 11 points each.

Beamer was led by 10 points from sophomore guard Shyla Akins.

Jefferson improved to 7-1 on the year with a non-league win over Curtis Saturday, 68-40.

The Raiders got 19 points from junior Hannah Kiyohara and 16 points from senior Stacy Albrecht during the win. Jefferson outscored Curtis 21-6 in the first quarter and led 35-17 at halftime.

Boys basketball

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders suffered a non-league loss Saturday to Chief Sealth High School, 59-50, in West Seattle. The loss dropped the Raiders to 4-3 overall.

Jefferson held a one-point lead at halftime, 27-26, but Chief Sealth outscored the Raiders, 21-13, in the third quarter.

Jefferson was led by the 17 points of senior point guard Cramer Doughty. Junior guard Justin Lanier chipped in 13 points and Xavyr Moss finished with eight points.
