Eagles back in the playoffs

The Federal Way boys basketball team didn’t set any South Puget Sound League records this time around. But the Eagles did wrap up another postseason berth with Tuesday night’s 70-32 win over Todd Beamer. Federal Way also beat Decatur Thursday, 64-46.

The first time the Eagles and Beamer met this season, Federal Way blew away the Titans, 111-34. The 111 points scored by the Eagles broke Enumclaw’s 8-year-old SPSL record of 110.

The Beamer win clinched fourth place in the SPSL South for the Eagles. Federal Way sits 12-6 in the South and 14-6 overall.

The Eagles could have tied with Puyallup for third place,but the Vikings beat cross-town rival Rogers Thursday night. Federal Way will now play the SPSL North’s No. 5-seed, which will be either Auburn Riverside or Kentridge, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Puyallup High School in a loser-out matchup. The winner will play again Saturday at 11 a.m. for the league’s seventh and final seed into the West Central District Tournament against the winner of a game between Curtis (South No. 5) and Enumclaw (North No. 4).

Tuesday against Beamer, the Eagles used four players in double digits and a stifling defense to pick up the victory. Darius Alo (12 points), Elon Langston (11), C.J. Green (11) and Jon Flood (10) led Federal Way. Kenny First-Rider paced the Titans with nine points.

The Eagles held Beamer to a total of 10 points in the second and third quarters. The Titans played their final game of their inaugural season Friday against Jefferson.

Federal Way used a 20-4 third quarter to run away from Decatur Thursday. Alo led the Eagles with 18 points, freshman Terrell Smith added 15 and junior Morris Anderson added 13. Senior Kellen McCaffrey led Decatur with 14 points.
