Buckley gets money for new crossing

By JOHN LEGGETT

Buckley has discovered that all good things really do come to those who wait.

Just hours before June 10 meeting of the City Council, the city learned from the Washington State Department of Transportation that it will receive a Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program grant in the amount of $170,620.

The money will be used to put a pedestrian crossing across state Route 410 from the Buckley skate park and Youth Center to the vicinity of Mason Avenue.

Mayor Pat Johnson said there have been several close calls involving pedestrians as drivers speed through the area.

City Administrator David Schmidt said that the award letter from the WSDOT was a pleasant surprise in that, “we had submitted that grant application so long ago that we though we had just slipped through the cracks and 16 other lucky cities had been chosen to receive the grant funding out of nearly 100 applicants statewide.
