Four Covington houses damaged by fireworks

At 6 p.m. Saturday four homes in the 25400 block of 163 Ave. SE were damaged when fireworks being discharged in the street ignited juniper bushes of a nearby house.

At first, only one home was affected as flames raced from the bushes to ignite the siding of the two story house. Flames then spread to the attic space and into the home. As firefighters battled the attic and roof fire, other homes became involved.

Sparks from the initial fire landed on three nearby residences and ignited their shake-style roofs. Two of them were spotted quickly by firefighters and extinguished causing only minimal damage to the roof areas. The third home was on an adjacent street. That fire had time to spread before firefighters were notified of the problem.

Because of the distances between the fires, new firefighting crews were called in to fight the latest roof fire. In addition to Kent Fire Department units, firefighters from Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety responded.

No one was injured in any of the fires. The hot afternoon required firefighters to be rotated frequently in order to keep them hydrated. Tukwila Explorer Scouts and King County Paramedics provided fluids and medical monitoring for firefighters.

The person responsible for starting the fire was identified and cited by the Covington Police Department. The fireworks which started the fire were of the legal type, but being discharged in a dangerous manner.
