Students at Crestwood Elementary School in Covington have won the Cruzin’ Kent and Covington Passport Challenge grand prize of $1,000 for P.E. equipment. The prize money will be awarded December 2 at their school assembly.

Organized by Kent4Health and the Coalition for a Healthy Community, the cities of Kent and Covington partnered with the Kent School District last summer in an effort to keep kids active while school was out.

The Cruzin’ Passport program encouraged kids to “Eat Smart, Play Hard & Learn” and collect stamps in “passport” books for their efforts. The schools with the largest number of completed passports turned in would be eligible for prizes. Students at 24 of the 30 participating schools turned in “passports”.

Black Diamond’s Sawyer Woods Elementary won second place while third place went to Kent’s Martin Sortun Elementary.

According to Kent resident Lori Macauley, her kids thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Cruzin' Passport Challenge.

“It made running errands with mom more exciting when we would add a couple new stops to collect our stamps each day,” said Macauley. “They loved the extra recognition for going to swimming lessons, soccer practice, ice skating, etc. It kept our whole family a little more healthy this summer!”

Univar USA, located in Kent, donated $1,000 for the P.E. equipment. The program was also sponsored by 88 local businesses including Multicare and Valley Medical Center.
