Big crowd and holiday tree light up

Hundreds turned out the night of Dec. 5 for Covington's tree-lighting ceremony. They sipped hot chocolate or apple cider, munched on cookies and enjoyed candy canes. The turnout was easily the largest the city has had for the annual event.
This year is special because the city planted a tree in a new roundabout near Fred Meyer, off Southeast 272nd Street and 168th Place Southeast. The 25-foot tree – paid for in part by Costco, which opened a nearby store in October – is strung with twinkling LED lights that will save the city as much as 85 percent on its electric bills over the cost of traditional lights, officials said.
Prior to the ceremony, the City Council unveiled the new sign for the roundabout, which is named after Don Henning, who served on the council from January 2004 until his death last year.
Crestwood Elementary School's student choir provided holiday music to help set the tone for the ceremony.
Citizens of the Year David Lucavish, who is also the newest member of the council, and Sonya Foss led the countdown to the tree-lighting.
