White River Presbyterian Church offers parenting seminar

Jun 04 2008

Helping children grow up to be responsible, healthy adults in today’s society can be quite difficult, but there are some secrets that can make it easier.

That’s what White River Presbyterian Church believes and it is eager to share those secrets with the community.

On three Wednesday evenings throughout the summer – today, July 2 and Aug. 6 at 6:30-8 p.m. – White River Presbyterian is offering a parenting seminar to the community.

“Too many parenting seminars give vague, general principles that we all know like, ‘be consistent,’ ‘follow through on what you say,’ or ‘don’t be so angry with your kids.’ We’re going to help parents know how to do those things in very practical ways,” said Deborah Taylor-Hough, director of neighborhood outreach at White River Presbyterian.

Each session will begin by showing a segment of a video series entitled, “Say Goodbye to Whining, Complaining, and Bad Attitudes ... in You and Your Kids.”

The series is produced by the National Center for Biblical Parenting, out of Lawrenceville, N.J., and features the team teaching of Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller, RN, BSN.

A children’s program also is provided for those 3-12.

“This isn’t just babysitting. We’re teaching the children material that complements what the adults are learning,” Taylor-Hough said.

Crafts, activities, stories and games teach children how they can get along in family life more effectively. Older children/teens are encouraged to sit in with the adults.

Although the seminar is being offered free of charge, White River Presbyterian asks those interested to register so they can plan accordingly.

Refreshments will be available.

The seminar will be held at the church, located at 526 12th Street SE, Auburn.

For more information or to register, call the church office at 253-866-2990 or visit www.WhiteRiverPres.org.
