School briefs | Vengadasalam earns grant

Auburn Mountainview High School's Dhavan Vengadasalam was recognized by the Comcast Leaders and Achievers™ program with a $1,000 grant from The Comcast Foundation.

Vengadasalam, Auburn Mountainview High School, plans on attending Whitman College this fall.

Winners were awarded the scholarship based on their demonstration of service and leadership.

Vengadasalam was a member of the middle school outreach program. He was an active member of the local community and translates Spanish for United Way tax consultants, in addition to being a regular volunteer at the Kent Food Bank.

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program provides one-time $1,000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students.

2 earn degrees from Boston U

Auburn's Stephanie L. McBride received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology, Magna Cum Laude, and a bachelor of arts in communication, Summa Cum Laude, from Boston University. Melissa Dubay, also of Auburn, earned a bachelor of arts in history and American studies. BU is the fourth largest independent university in the U.S., with an enrollment of more than 29,000 students in its 17 schools and colleges.

Auburn's Laurel Grose received a scholarship to attend Highline Community College for fall quarter in recognition of her outstanding academic achievements. The scholarships cover tuition costs for one quarter and honor students who have a 3.5 GPA or better. Academic Achievement Scholarships are awarded fall, winter and spring quarters and administered by Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges. …

Auburn's Megan Light, a secondary education outstanding graduate at Western Washington University, earned a degree in K-12 physical education and health. Light plans to continue substitute teaching in the Shoreline School District. A graduate of Auburn High School, she is the daughter of Jim and Robin Light. …

… Auburn's David Racek made the Montana State University spring semester honor. … Auburn Riverside graduate and distance runner Julian-Blake Cowan will attend Columbia University in New York City this fall. … Auburn Riverside graduate Thomas Hartwell, who competed at the state 4A track championships this season, will attend the Uniersity of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. … Jason M. Kline, a junior from Auburn, was among the 683 students named to the Gonzaga University Dean's List for spring semester 2009. Students must earn a 3.5 to 3.69 grade-point average to be listed. … Eric Brenaman, a senior at Auburn Riverside High School, was awarded a 2009 Ken Watson TransEd Scholarship, provided through the South Seattle Community College Foundation. Brenaman will be pursuing an associate’s degree at the college next year. He won the scholarship for his expertise in diesel and heavy equipment.
