Local duo Phil McKee and Ron Bates had little trouble at the annual Two-Man Best Ball Tournament at San Juan Golf and Country Club, shooting 65 on Saturday and a 69 on Sunday to capture the gross division.
Kevin Widmayer and Darren Olshefshy won the low net, shooting 57 Saturday and 57 Sunday for a total of 114.
Par for the course is 71.
Bates and McKee credit perfect weather and a course condition that Bates described as “awesome.”
“We played pretty good. We ham-and-egged it,” McKee said Monday. “Both of us actually played pretty well on Saturday. Ronnie played a little better on Sunday.
“The course was excellent. A little breezy. Some tough pin placements on Saturday. Greens were smooth and fast. It made some holes interesting.”
Mark McClintock and Bryan Germain fell behind McKee and Bates and couldn’t catch up despite strong play Sunday.
“It’s a great place to play,” Bates said. “I feel really lucky. Everyone knows everyone else. There’s a real sense of community in tournaments like this.”
