— Summer Reading Program with Mad Science: Bug Science, 1:30 p.m., Friday Harbor Elementary School field. Mad Science will explore bug science. Children engage in exciting hands-on activities, watch spectacular demonstrations, and participate in inquiry-based question and answer. Sponsored by the San Juan Island Library. Call 378-2798.

— Island Stage Left’s Shakespeare Discussion Series, 7 p.m., the Friday Harbor House’s San Juan Conference Room. This scholarly discussion with Western Washington University Professor Mary Metzger is free. The discussion series continues on Wednesdays through Aug. 13.

— West Side Trail Thursdays, 5 p.m., Westside Preserve. Volunteer trail building on the Westside Preserve, San Juan Island. Sponsored by the San Juan County Land Bank. Call 378-4402.

Friday, August 8
— Solar Siblings, 6-8 p.m., Port of Friday Harbor’s Jack Fairweather Park. Part of the Waterfront Concert Series.

— Teen Open Gaming Night, 6:30 p.m., San Juan Island Library. Free. Bring your own and challenge a friend, or use some of the games the library has on hand — Wii, Cube, assorted board games, D&D. Snacks will be provided.

— Tile Painting with Chinmayo, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Westcott Bay Sculpture Park. Part of the Family Art Days sponsored by Island Museum of Art and Westcott Bay Sculpture Park. Free.

— Pearl Django in concert, 2 p.m., Lopez Center Outdoor Pavilion. A benefit for the Lopez School Music Advocacy Foundation. — Ruzivo, featuring marimba and mbira music from Zimbabwe, 3-5 p.m., Port of Friday Harbor’s Jack Fairweather Park. Part of the Waterfront Concert Series.

— Juried exhibit at Gallery San Juan, 6-8:30 p.m., Gallery San Juan (232 A St.). Free. A juried exhibition and public art sale of plein air paintings. Proceeds benefit the San Juan Preservation Trust. The paintings will remain on display until Aug. 23.

Thursday, August 21
— Book Launch Party: “My Champion,” 5 p.m., Pelindaba Downtown. Meet local author Sue Carnes. With readings by Ernest Pugh. Free.

Friday, August 22
— Sister Wives, 6-8 p.m., Port of Friday Harbor’s Jack Fairweather Park. All-girl blues band performs in Waterfront Concert Series.

Saturday, August 23
— Spoonshine, 9:30 p.m, Herb’s Tavern. Spoonshine has been creating and refining their handcrafted original music for nearly 10 years. Their brand of Americana combines vocal harmonies, mandolin, guitar, keys, fiddle, stand-up bass and assorted percussion.

— Teen End of Summer Make Your Own Ice Cream Party, 2 p.m., San Juan Island Library. The library has the recipe and the stuff. All you need to do is mix your own concoction and sample the tasty results! Free to all teens.
