Second Annual Lopez Island Home Tour and Auction

Aug 23 2005

The Second Annual Lopez Island Home Tour is your opportunity to tour nine dramatic, creative, and thoroughly original houses here on Lopez. This self-guided tour will be on Saturday, September 17, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

At 4 p.m., following the tour, there will be a reception at Lopez Center with music, libations, appetizers, a light supper, and an array of fabulous desserts created by some of the island's most amazing bakers. You'll also have an opportunity to bid on some exciting items at the live auction with master Lopezian auctioneer Robert Herrmann. Items include bi-plane rides, a weekend in a Victoria B&B, and three original works by Christa Malay.

Tickets for the tour and reception/auction are $40. There is a limited number of tour-only tickets available at $20. Tickets are on sale at Lopez Center, Islehaven Books, and Paper, Scissors on the Rock. All proceeds benefit Lopez Center for Community and the arts.

It is strongly suggested that you carpool. Feel free to leave your car at Lopez Center to join up with friends. Remember to wear your ticket where the home guides can see it.

Feldman/Norman Residence

When Danah Feldman purchased her land in 1980, she was looking for one thing--a place to live. What ended up a bigger challenge was creating a home on perpetually wet, virtually unbuildable ground. Danah designed and built the first house, now used as a studio, in 1980 with the help of carpenter Randy Stribling. From that auspicious beginning the Feldman/Norman residence has expanded to a clustered grouping of main house, caretaker house, studios and garden outbuildings, all designed and built by Danah and Ron Norman.

Hubbard Residence

The Hubbard residence is an authentic log home nestled in the forest. Located on a 150-foot bluff, this home commands a view of five islands across Lopez Sound. Peggy Hubbard designed the home; construction began in 1979 by the Hubbards themselves, with much help from daughter Kathleen.

Linville/Bennett Residence

Living on the water is just a dream for many. The Linville-Bennetts turned that dream into reality at their lovely home on property with no-bank beach access and extraordinary views from Orcas Island to the Olympic Mountains. Unique features in this home include high ceilings with large exposed beams, two large interior stained glass windows, and a boardwalk out to the beach.

McDaniels Residence

The McDaniels home, with its stunning views over San Juan Channel to the Gulf Islands, was originally designed and built by its previous owners, Mike and Twanette Porter. Reflecting their love of Asian art and antiques, the Porters included many Asian influences, especially in the spacious entryway.

McRoberts Residence

Architect, owner, and builder Dave McRoberts has created a rustic, Northwest style home that takes advantage of sunsets over Fisherman Bay without sacrificing privacy. Heavy timbers, boulders, and other native materials are combined with marble, raw concrete and stainless steel for a unique take on classic "lodge" design.

Reeve Guest Residence

The Reeve's guesthouse, on Flint Beach at the far south end of Lopez, is sited in the vicinity of the old Flint homestead. Surrounded by conservation easements held by the San Juan Preservation Trust, this home was designed as a gathering place for family and friends.

Stephens Residence

This warm and welcoming family home has the best of both worlds--views across Fisherman Bay and San Juan Channel and Lopez Village. The Stephens' country-style open plan home includes a sunroom that opens onto a private fenced garden, a traditional hearth in the spacious living area, and a balcony off the master bedroom.

Trelease Residence

The charm of Lopez Island certainly wasn't lost on Murray and Mariette Trelease, who purchased their high-bank site overlooking San Juan Channel on their second trip here in 1976. In 1992, they turned to Sausalito architect John March Davis to design this lovely home. Davis took much of his inspiration from Lopez water towers, and created a three story living tower with high French doors to let in light.

Weinheimer Residence

Overlooking an apple orchard, rolling fields and flocks of sheep, the center island home of Jean and Phil Weinheimer has become a Lopez icon since it was completed in 1996. They never really planned to become farmers, but when the land showed potential for an apple orchard, Hill Farm was born.
