Lopez Student Drama Festival

A Spring Festival of Student Drama will be presented at the Lopez Woodmen Hall on Wednesday and Thursday, May 4th and 5th, 7:30pm. Admission is by $5 suggested donation at the door.
Several one-act plays and scenes from larger works will be acted and directed by a dozen Lopez students in 7th through 11th grade. The material should be considered PG-13, inappropriate for young children due to some mature language and content.
I searched far and wide for material for these young actors, said Richard Carter, in his first year as Lopez Schools drama coach. It was really difficult.
He narrowed his findings down to suitable pieces that he thought the kids would like, then let them read through the works and choose the ones they wanted to produce. Since the second week in March, the actors have rehearsed twice a week and are now up to three times a week as opening night approaches.
Carter said that unlike some of the serious dramas performed by Lopez students in recent years, all the scripts chosen for this festival are light comedy. Its very funny stuff, he said.
On Friday, the day after the final performance, Carter leaves for Massachusetts where he has been accepted to Shakespeare and Company, a theatre company and educational organization in its 28th season.
