Special Events

San Juan Island: Best of the San Juans - 2004 Festival of Food, Music, and Art - Sat. Sept. 11, 10-5 Westcott Bay Sculpture Park. A variety of demonstrations by artists will be happening: Tracy Powell of Anacortes–stone carving; Walter Henderson and Paul Lindersmith of Orcas Island–woodcarving; Kevin Pettelle of Sultan–bronze casting. A live and silent auction of art by the Northwest’s finest artists will be held, plus a juried art exhibit with local artists selling and exhibiting their work. Art and craft workshops for children are part of the festival, plus performance artists, local musicians and samplings of delectable island foods. Admission by donation. From Mud to Magic San Juan Community Theatre and Gallery in September. The jurors have selected 37 pieces for this 2nd Biennial Inter-Island Ceramic Art Show from Center, Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan Island artists–an impressive display of island talent. In October this show will be on Lopez Island, in November on Shaw Island, and Nov. 26-Dec. 24 on Orcas Island.

Lopez Island

New studio: Stellar Studio - 25 Eads Lane in Jeremy Snapp’s 3 cupola building. Moon presents watercolors of island scenes and fantasy. Jules creates necklaces, earrings, and bracelets from lampworked beads, some of which look like the aurora borealis. Stop in to visit the artists and see their work. Hours: Th-Sat, Noon-5.

Chimera - Linda Ann Vorobik and Gerry Newcomb present their most recent work Sept. 11-Oct. 9. Linda Ann is a botanical illustrator specializing in Northwest native flora and will exhibit original watercolors, prints, and cards. Gerry works in glass and specializes in cast glass wall hangings, table top sculptures, and glass tables. Meet these artists at the opening Artists’ Reception Sat. Sept. 11, 5-7pm. The Annual Group Show by Chimera artists continues until Sept. 10. Gallery Hours: Th-Sat 10-5, Sun 10-3 or appt: 468-3265.

Dancing Trees Framing and Gallery - 25 Eads Lane. Karen Hattman and Brooks are presenting their work, which is focused on nature: watercolors and oils by Karen, photography and encaustic collage by Brooks. Hours: W-Fri 12-5;30; Sat 11-4, Sun by appt. 468-3967.

fish bay mercantile - This month’s show honors Hildegard Goss, a Lopez legend, who at age 86 continues her amazing and diverse art. On display are her early paintings as well as recent work on a wonderful variety of subjects. Hours: Daily 10-5.

Gallery Ten - There will be a jewelry “trunk show” of CiCi Charvet-Gurney’s work, a collection designed exclusively for Gallery 10, Sunday, September 19. Find new work in pastels by Christa Malay, watercolors by Caroline Buchanan, and photographs of the island and the Northwest by Ben Malay. See the new romantic fall clothing by Jill Trear. Lopez Center for Community and the Arts - Sponsored by the Lopez Artist Guild, Co-laboration–one art work, more than one artist–continues to Sept. 30. Center Hours: Tu-Fri 11-4; Sat 12-4.

Lopez Post Office - Photos of the 2004 Kids Summer Activities and Workshops are on display.

Lopez Library - Peter de Lory, Seattle photographer, presents Island Suite. For the past ten years, Peter has been a regular visitor to Lopez Island and comments: “This exhibit of black and white photographs reconsiders its subtle and often sparse landscape.”

Prism - Art supplies plus new and vintage artwear and jewelry. Wed-Sat 11-4.

Sugar & Spice Gallery - Original etchings, carved gourds, textiles, and Peruvian crafts are on display. Hours: Mon-Sat 10-5.

Artists’ Studios

Steve Horn Photography - Photographs of the islands. Documentary style wedding photography. Wed-Th or appt. 468-2100.

Studio at 25 Eads Lane - Linda Anne Koenig. Congregations: assembled objects in hand made boxes. Fri 1-5; Sat 11-5.

Wren Studios - Classic impressionistic paintings of the Northwest and Europe. Hours: when the gate is open.

Friday Harbor & San Juan Island

Arctic Raven Gallery - 130 South First St. The Magic and the Mystery, new works by Arthur Vickers, opens Sept. 11. Using multiple layers of ink mixed with 23k gold dust, Arthur builds light-reflecting representational images, which capture the mystery of moonlit Northwest nights. His landscapes and seascapes have become symbolic of the Pacific Northwest coast. Hours: Mon-Sat 10-5; Sun 11-4.

The Collective - 301 Tucker Ave. This is a community of artists: Cynthia Church (painting); Malcolm Suttles and Joan Benney (photography); Taylor Bruce (illustration); Danielle Dean (art photography and mixed media); Matthew Gray Palmer (sculpture, bronze, mixed media); Michael D’Abrosca (computer design/photography). Hours are posted.

Dolphin Arts - 165 1st St. Find Vivien Burnett’s silkscreens of island scenes, matted or framed and on cotton clothing, and the unique jewelry of Deborah Johnsen. Hours: Daily 10-5.

Friday Harbor Art Studio and Custom Picture Framing - 30 Web St. Howard Rosenfeld currently is working on scrimshaw, drypoint engravings, and collographs. During the County Fair he worked with children doing “Scrim Print for Kids”–a big hit–and has an example on display. Hours: Daily 10-6.

Gallery San Juan - 210 Nichols St. A trio of talented artists is featured this month. Eric Gewiss creates bold, colorful, clean images. Michelle Shober has whimsical watercolor animals. Ron Wilson presents sensitive oil paintings. Hours: Mon-Sat 10-5:30.

The Garuda and I - 60 - 1st St. Original jewelry by Pacific Northwest artists. Hours: Daily 10-5.

Island Studios - 270 Spring St. Enjoy refreshments, music, and demonstrations by artists at the Open House, Sat. Sept. 25. Watch Darleen Nixon, Lydia Lukahnovich, Dona Reed, Clark Warren, Shari Larsen, and others demonstrate their crafts. This gallery of island artists welcomes Caroline Buchanan of Obstruction Island and her watercolors. Hours: Mon-Sat 10-5; Sun 11-5.

Napier Gallery - 232 “A” St. Find the wildlife bronze sculpture of Jason Napier and work by Northwest artists. Hours: Tu-Sat 10-5. Closed Sun and Mon.

San Juan Community Theatre Lobby - Guard St. See From Mud to Magic, the 2nd Biennial Juried Interisland Ceramic Art Show–an impressive exhibit of island talent. View the innovative work of eight artists from San Juan Island, three from Lopez Island, four from Orcas Island, and one from Center Island. Hours: Tu-Fri 11-4; Sat 11-2, and during shows.

Studio 7 Printmaking - 301 Tucker Ave. Anthony DiMichele is an experienced printmaker. Hours: By appt. 378-5665.

waterworks gallery - Argyle at Web St. Catherine Eaton Skinner’s encaustic and mixed media paintings are on display Sept. 11-Oct. 6. In her own words they are “landscapes of the soul bound to landscapes of the earth” and may contain images of animals, birds, or fish collaged and textured with antique Japanese rice paper or Mylar. The gallery is open for a special viewing of this show on Sun, Sept. 12, 11-4. Gallery Hours: Mon-Sat 10:30-5:30.

Westcott Bay Reserve Sculpture Park and Nature Reserve - At entrance to Roche Harbor Village. See Special Events for the Sept. 11 Best of the San Juans Festival. Take a self-guided tour of over 100 sculptures by island and Northwest artists; maps of artists and their works are at the Gatehouse. Open dawn to dusk. $3 suggested donation. Info: 370-5050.

Country Studios

Jill Trear Designs - Corner of Cattle Point Rd. and Madden Lane–The Corner Store. Jill creates garments and accessories in hand-dyed, hand-painted silk and velvet plus more casual wear. Hours: Th-Sat 11-6, Sun 12-5. 378-2464.

Madden Lane Studio - Pottery and Showroom - Madden Lane between Douglas and Cattle Point Roads. Rick Ellsworth and Paula Kenworthy make functional and decorative pottery. Visitors always welcome.

Pemberton Bronze Sculpture Studio/Gallery - Cannery Row, 4965 Pear Point Rd. Tour the foundry to see how bronze sculpture is created, from concept to completion. Work is on display at Island Studios. 378-3568. Hours: Th-Sat 1-6.

Roche Harbor Village Artists - 20+ artists in many mediums have work on display in the courtyard. Hours vary this month.

Andrea Simmons Pottery Studio - 588 High Haro. Earthenware luster glazes, abstract geometric designs, and sculpture are on display. For directions: 378-9541.

The Watering Hole Gallery - 1232 Egg Lake Rd. See a lighter side of island life in photos by Peter de Lorenzi, new wood sculptures by Bill Munn of British Columbia, and beaded jewelry by Lynn Danaher of Friday Harbor. Hours: Wed-Sun 11-5.

The Living Room - North Beach Rd. Portraits by James Hardman, Ina Stoa, and David Densmore continues through Sept. 30. Spanning fifteen years, this collection reveals portraiture of the self and others using a range of media and modes of expression. Hours: Fri & Sat, 12-6pm.

Orcas Arts & Glassworks - Main Street. Watch blown glasswork being created and view jewelry made at this shop with a collection of stones, including rare stones. Hours: Daily 9-7pm.

Orcas Center - Mt. Baker Rd. Phyllis Ray, a long-time Seattle artist, presents A Chair By Any Other Name. Her work is described as serious to whimsical, rich in colors in a variety of mediums in many settings with many moods. Artist’s opening reception: Fri, Sept. 10, 5:30-7:30. Visit On and Off the Wall in the Madrona Gallery, an ever-changing exhibit of work of artists of Orcas Island. As work is sold, another piece by the artist takes its place. Center Hours: Tu-Fri 10am-4pm and one hour before performances.

Orcas Senior Center - No. Beach Rd. The innovative quilting of Alice Logan is on display in the Lundeen Room. Originally working in cotton calico, she now creates “representational wall hangings” from her free hand drawings in a variety of fabrics, e.g. satin, silk, cotton, etc. Hours: Mon-Fri, 9-4.

Rosario Gallery - View the oil paintings, primarily landscapes, of Nancy Quackenbush of Orcas Island.

East Horseshoe

Artworks - Olga. New gallery member, Jim Parker, shows birds carved in wood in the folk tradition. For many years he showed his work in the Cape Cod area. This co-operative gallery displays work of over 80 Orcas Island artists in many mediums. At the cafe in The Artworks, view new paintings of Mexico by Michele DeLong. Hours: Daily 9-8.

The James Hardman Gallery - Olga - Upstairs at The Artworks. View the original paintings of James Hardman of Orcas Island. Hours: Daily 9-6.

The Lambiel Museum - 668 Olga. Rd. At this museum, the work of 180 outstanding artists of San Juan County is on display, including a new oil painting done in 1925 by Helen Loggie. Give your guests a special island experience. Hours: Open daily for guided tours by appt: 376-4544. Call as early as possible for the date you wish. Allow about 2 hours. $10 per person.

Studio 4:20 - Pt. Lawrence Rd. Delight in garden art, mosaics, and wind chimes of sea glass. Hours: Daily 9-dark.

West Horseshoe

Crow Valley Pottery - Orcas Rd. In readiness for fall, find hand-blown glass pears in many sizes from Ann Wright Studios and glass pumpkins by Mark Ellinger, plus new very fine “Cased Crystal” glasswork from Lundberg Studios. Crow Valley potters have many new patterns from their own kilns. Hours: Daily 10-5.

Walter Henderson Sculpture Studio - 266 Gaggs Rd. Deer Harbor. Walter carves birds and whales from native wood. Sat-Sun 1-6. 376-4605.

Orcas Island Pottery - West Beach Rd. In the gallery and log cabin find plates, bowls, pitchers, cups, and much more. In the garden view small, friendly hand-thrown turtles for your yard. Hours: Daily 10-5.

The Right Place Pottery - West Beach Road. Find a diverse selection of pottery by Trudy Erwin and her students. The paintings of Jane Kemp are in the gallery. Winter classes begin in October. Hours: Daily 10-5.
