Lopez celebrates the 4th with a bang – and more

Hot, hot, hot.

July Fourth in the San Juans was a sunny scorcher, with crowds of people on Lopez Island to check out the 10 and 5 km run/walk, parade, BBQs, and the island's famous fireworks.

The theme of this year's parade was "Freedom on the Rock," and the Grand Marshal was the Lopez Fire and EMS Department.

The 2007 Lions Club Fourth of July Parade award winners are:

Best of Theme: Lopez Island Yacht Club

Chamber of Commerce: Cirque Du Pharmacie

Mayor's: No More War

Queen's: Pink for Peace

Lions Club: Lopez Kiwi Farm

Chinc Clark Spirit: Gilligan's Island

Best Bribe: Ron's Non Repair

Grand Marshal's: Spencer Spit State Park

Special: Keith Highlanders with Lopezian Ted Phillips

Special: Carlson Family Kelp Chorus.

The 28th annual Lions Club run/walk had 270 participants. Chuck Dumke, with a 36-minute, 14-second time, captured the 10 km run; Amy Esary, with a 42.23, was the fastest woman in that division. Divisional male winners include:

13-19 age division: Sebastian Lasbo (41.37)

20-29: Jette Harnmeir (37.12)

30-39: David Svilar (40.21)

40-49: Chuck Dumke

50-59: Randy Gaylord (44.06)

60-69: Ian Lange (48.54)

Over 70: Jon Avent (61.50)

Female winners:

20-29: Kristin Haberly (49.51)

30-39: Amy Esary

40-49: Ray Quall (51.49)

50-59: Patsy Goodhope (58.30)

5 km run overall winners were Zack Durant (19.54) and Jackie Cohen (21.19). Male divisional winners:
