San Juan Master Gardeners: Order native plants for gardens now
Nov 11 2008
The Master Gardener Foundation of San Juan County is now taking orders for its annual Native Plant Sale. The Foundation has 23 species of mostly native plants, including conifers, deciduous trees, shrubs, ferns and groundcovers. The plants are one to two years old, either bare-root or plugs, are conservation stock and are typically sold in bundles of five plants. They range from 8” to 36” in height and prices range from $3.25 to $13.00 per plug or bundle. Examples of species are: Evergreen Huckleberry, Mock Orange, Red Flowering Currant, Shore Pine, Deer Fern, Kinnickinnik, Salal and much more.
The annual sale is intended to promote the wider use of native plants in landscaping, gardens, and restoration projects because such plants are more closely matched to local soils and weather conditions, typically require less water and care and provide excellent habitat for native wildlife. Last year over 5,000 plants were sold.
Request an order form from WSU Extension at 378-4414 or print one out online at http://sanjuan.wsu.edu. There is minimum purchase of $25. for all pre-orders. All pre-orders must have a $25. deposit. The balance is due at the time of pick-up on Feb. 28 at the Orcas Grange on Orcas Road. Deadline for orders is Feb. 13.
Plants will also be available for sale on Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Orcas Grange. Variety and quantities will be limited, so those interested in ordering are asked to order now for best selection.
