Farm tours part of conservation meeting

Danna Kinsey and Bruce Gregory, San Juan Islands Conservation District Managers announced recently that the San Juan Islands Conservation District will host a Washington State Conservation Commission meeting on Sept. 17 and 18 in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island.

They will conduct a field tour featuring Conservation District projects in San Juan County on Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 1-5 p.m., which will visit sites on San Juan Island and look at projects implemented with a variety of program and funding mechanisms, and different resource concerns with different land uses.

Project areas include:

• Cady Mountain - NRCS Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) Project, an on-going Garry Oak savannah restoration project on the top of Cady Mountain.

• Lacrover Farm - Local Agriculture and Farm Planning, a family-owned-and-operated certified organic farm, which raises a variety of animals, poultry and produce on 30 acres. Lacrover Farm participated in the Environmental Quality Incentives Program.

• Mitchell Bay Farm - a certified organic farm and nursery owned and operated by the Conservation District Farm Planner and Agricultural Resources Committee Chair, Bruce Gregory and wife Colleen Howe.

The field tour will be followed by a dinner meeting with the Conservation Commission at Westcott Bay Orchards at the north end of San Juan Island.

This tour is being held prior to the Washington State Conservation Commission meeting, which will be held on Thursday, Sept. 18.
