Community Foundation celebrates giving

The Orcas Island Community Foundation will hold its annual Report to the Community and A Celebration of Giving Luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 11 from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Rosario Resort Discovery House. The entire Orcas community is invited to help to celebrate the generosity of the people who live here and to honor two of the island’s most extraordinary philanthropists, Rachel Adams and Marilyn Anderson. The suggested donation to help defray the cost of the luncheon is $25.
As soon as Rachel and Marilyn arrived to farm on Crane Island, they became involved in the life of Crane and Orcas. From running the water system on Crane, to playing in the Community Band, to volunteering at the Orcas Library, to serving on countless boards of directors, Rachel and Marilyn have done it all. In addition to the hours spent serving various island non profits, they have contributed generously to an even wider number of organizations.
To celebrate the generosity of these two women, Mary Riveland, the Chair of the San Juan Preservation Trust and past Chair of the Orcas Center will speak about community philanthropy. Then Aloysia Friedman, the artistic director of the Orcas Chamber Music Festival, will talk about Rachel and Marilyn’s contributions to the community and will play a musical offering in their honor. Susan Gudgell, Hilary Canty, Bob Waunch and Mollie Herzog will make a few brief remarks about the state of philanthropy on the island.
