Sumner/Bonney Lake Rec Dept. offers shuttle to regional skate parks

Local skaters tired of hitting the same lines at the Sumner Sk8 Park can sign up for the recreation program’s Skate Away for an opportunity to practice the tricks at other skate parks around the area.

Each Monday throughout the summer, the Sumner/Bonney Lake Recreation Department will take a small group of skaters to one of 10 skate parks in the area, ranging from University Place and Milton all the way to Bellevue and Everett.

“Bellevue is supposed to be pretty good,” said Recreation Specialist Shanna Crane, who heads the program, adding that the park has a larger, concrete bowl than the Sumner park.

The program began Monday with a trip to Auburn and Bonney Lake and continues every Monday through Aug. 11.

Crane said the purpose of the program is to give local skaters an opportunity to see other parks.

“We want to broaden their horizons and see what else is out there,” Crane said. “We’re just trying to open up more options for them.”

Registration is required for the trips and seats are limited. The cost is $15 per trip and all trips include staff and transportation. The trips are open to skateboarders and inline skaters in grades 6 through 10 and participants are required to bring all safety gear, including helmets and pads.

Skaters are asked to bring a sack lunch and bottled water.

The bus leaves from the Robert Miller Gym (behind Daffodil Elementary on Valley Avenue) at 11 a.m. Monday and returns at 4 p.m.
