Tomahawk JV spikers complete undefeated season
Nov 19 2008
Excluding tournaments, the Tomahawk junior varsity volleyball team played 14 games this season. They won them all.
The Tomahawks played a diverse schedule, including JV opponents from this year’s district-qualifying schools like Stanwood, Snohomish, Arlington and Monroe as well as Edmonds-Woodway and Shorecrest from Wesco South.
The team of freshmen through juniors was led by junior hitter Aida Cardona and freshman setters RaeAnn Bobadilla and Lexie Fitzmaurice. Other players swung between JV and varsity, including hitter Hannah Kreutz, middle Kristina Naff and libero Katie Peterson.
“We still don’t have a lot of height, but we do have some kids that will be coming back next year that should be able to keep us strong and competitive,” said JV coach Nate McClellan.
The Tomahawk JV team has a history of success, which has helped make the varsity team a perennial district contender. The strength of the JV team doesn’t guarantee a state team at the next level though, according to McClellan.
“We’ve always played in the JV championship for the last five years or so,” he added.
Factors like players’ offseason training can influence how a team does at the next level.
“They’re a good squad,” the coach added. “They enjoy playing together. ... A lot of them play year-round so it’s paying off for them.”
