Sprinkler system saves pet store from fire

MARYSVILLE — Sprinklers saved the Jones and Co. Pet Store, at the intersection of State Avenue and 76th Street, according to Kristen Thorstenson, public education specialist and public information officer for the Marysville Fire District.

At 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 13, the Marysville Fire District dispatched a single engine in response to a report that the roof in the back of the pet store's structure had collapsed, and the sprinkler system had activated. When crews arrived, they discovered the building was full of smoke, but the roof had not collapsed. There had been a fire in a back room, and two heads of the sprinkler system had activated to extinguish it.

Thorstenson reported that there were no injuries, and the only animals lost were a few fish. The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating, and the dollar loss is estimated to be $80,000 for the structure and its contents.

"Although there was water damage, had the sprinkler system not been there, the animals and building most likely would have been a total loss," Thorstenson said.
