Arlington woodworker published in national woodworking magazine

An Arlington resident, Dave Van Ess, has written an article that will be published in Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts magazine, due out on newsstands July 14.

An applications engineer for Cypress Seminconder in Lynnwood, Van Ess teaches scroll saw classes and has trained more than 200 Cub Scout leaders in the joys of scrolling.

“My work is varied but lately I have been concentrating on the scroll saw,” said Van Ness who lives on Jim Creek Road, east of Arlington.

The article is on how to make a pig-shaped breadboard,” Van Ness said.

He does a variety of woodwork, from furniture to earrings.

“Since it is a hobby I can do what peaks my interest at the moment. Presently, I am doing vessels cut out with a scroll saw and sanded smooth.”

Van Ness is very interested in Arts and Crafts Design from 1895 to 1915, which inspires his work.

“When I do build furniture it is usually in this style.”

He designed a rocking horse to be built with building materials.

“I tried to get the idea of a horse with the fewest possible lines,” he said.

Van Ness has also published articles in Woodccraft magazine.

Since woodworking is mostly a hobby, he prefers not to compete with people who are trying to make a living at it.
