Smokey Point Community Church's ‘A Star is Born’ benefits foster kids

ARLINGTON — Smokey Point Community Church will present its annual Christmas musical, “A Star is Born” at 4 and 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at 17721 Smokey Point Blvd. in Arlington.

The play is about a group trying to put on a Christmas musical and the lead character playing Mary gets hurt, so a backstage hand tries to help by calling 1-800-Big-Star, according to the director, Tammie Clifford.

“They get Sophia, who’s focus is not on the true meaning of Christmas at all — it’s all about her being a big star,” Clifford said.

The Wisemen, then, take her lead and they try to draw attention to themselves as well.

But in the end Sophia and the rest of the cast understand that the true meaning of Christmas is the birth of Jesus and the sacrifices he has made for us.

It’s not about the presents, Clifford said, adding the church has worked very hard to teach this lesson to the kids involved.

“We have about 55 kids ages 6 - 14 this year and they sound amazing,” she said. “We also want to teach the kids at this age to serve others, so it becomes part of who they are.”

Clifford said she feels honored and blessed by God to be able to work with the most amazing kids.

“I know that these kids every year change the lives of others through these musicals,” she said.

Proceeds from the show will benefit Kids Dream of Snohomish County which serves local foster families. They are collecting new socks, underwear and pajamas for newborns through teens and donations can be dropped off anytime in the church office or on the day of the show.

“Even the kids in the program are asked to either do extra chores at home to earn money to buy an item, or to give up one of their own Christmas gifts in order to buy for the foster kids,” Clifford said.
